News Release Greenleaf Receives Prison Society's Justice AwardAt an event in Philadelphia Tuesday night, Senator Greenleaf was presented with the Pennsylvania Prison Society's Justice Award for his steadfast support of prison reform. The award was presented during the organization's 225th year anniversary celebration. The Senator is only the third person to receive the Justice Award. The Pennsylvania Prison Society traces its history back to the 18th century in Philadelphia as an organized group of citizens fighting to reform the abuses and corruption that were commonplace in prisons at that time. It is the oldest organization of its kind, and today continues to advocate for reform. Senator Greenleaf has lead efforts in the Pennsylvania Legislature for a number of years responding to the state's prison overpopulation crisis driven by years of harsh punishments for non-violent drug offenders. The Senator is currently working on legislation (SB 100) that would enhance Pennsylvania's alternative sentencing programs for non-violent offenders and improve rehabilitation and community re-entry for inmates. "I am truly honored to receive this recognition from one of the most highly regarded advocacy organizations in Pennsylvania," said the Senator. "I am proud to have the opportunity to work with the Prison Society on issues that are so important for humanity and the future of our state. The important progress that we are making today is a direct result of their hard work. And not only do they have a profound impact on public policy, but their wide network of staff and volunteers who visit and work with inmates truly turns lives around. Rehabilitation programs within prisons are just as important as good law enforcement in keeping our streets safe." |
