Senator Greenleaf Sponsors $5,000 Grant for Upper Moreland
Hoops
On Saturday,
January 10, 2009, Senator Greenleaf (R-Montgomery / Bucks) presented the
players, parents, and coaches of the Upper Moreland Hoops youth basketball
organization with a Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic
Development mock check for $5,000 at the organization's Opening Day Ceremony at
the Upper Moreland Middle School gym.
Also, Philadelphia
Sixers mascot, Hip Hop, was present to help jumpstart the season.
The $5,000 grant
will be used to offset registration costs for disadvantaged children. As well,
the funding will support gym rental and equipment costs.
Upper Moreland
Hoops is a basketball organization for boys and girls between the ages of six
and 18 of Upper Moreland Township and surrounding communities. The organization
manages a number of leagues distributed by age group. Parents and community
members volunteer as coaches, directors, and referees.
Each year, more
than 400 players, 30 coaches, 20 directors, referees, and support staff, and
hundreds of dedicated parents participate.
"This a great
community organization that gets kids of all ages involved," said Senator
Greenleaf. "I am proud of all those who work hard year after year to get the
teams ready to compete and all the players who make this such an outstanding
organization. There are lifelong benefits to playing any recreational sport,
and I'm happy that so many of the young people of Upper Moreland Township have
chosen to take advantage of this great opportunity."
